Tudományos érdeklődés:
A török filológia és történelem különböző témai, különös tekintettel a törökség Közép- és Kelet-Európában játszott történetére:

1. A kelet-európai steppe-övezet az 5–13. században (hunok, avarok, bolgárok, kazárok, magyarok, besenyők, kunok),
2. a korai török–magyar kapcsolatok, a magyar őstörténet török vonatkozásai,
3. a mongol kor története (13–16. sz.), különös tekintettel az Arany Hordára és tatár utódállamaira (a Kazáni és Krími Kánságok, a Nogáj Horda).

Tisztségek, társasági tagságok, kitüntetések és kutatóutak:

• 2015 augusztus: a Magyar Érdemkereszt Lovagkeresztje állami kitüntetés
• 2014–: a dunaszerdahelyi Vámbéry Polgári Társulás elnöke
• 2008: Vámbéry-díj orientalisztikai munkásságáért
• 1970–: az MTA Orientalisztikai Tudományos Bizottságának tagja; 1997–1999 között, majd 2011-től 2014-ig ismét választott elnöke
• 1977–1982: az MTA nemzetközi orientalisztikai folyóiratának, az Acta Orientaliá-nak szerkesztőbizottsági tagja, 2003-tól 2018-ig az Acta Orientalia főszerkesztője
• 1968-tól a magyar orientalisták egyesületének, a Kőrösi Csoma Társaságnak alapító tagja; 1988–1990 között a Kőrösi Csoma Társaság alelnöke

Scholarly interest:
Various themes of Turkic philology and history concerning the role of Turkic elements in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, among others:

1. History of the steppe region of Eastern Europe in the 5th–13th centuries (Huns, Avars, Onogurs, Bulgars, Khazars, Pechenegs, Cumans),
2. Turco–Hungarian contacts in the same period,
3. History of the Mongol and post-Mongol states with a special emphasis on the Golden Horde and her successor states (the Kazan and the Crimean Khanates, the Nogay Horde) in the 13th–16th cc.

• 2011–: Elected president of the Oriental Committee of HAS
